Well that's a fine How'd You Do

We hopped aboard the Governor's Island ferry over Labor Day weekend to indulge in a porcine orgy of epic proportions––Pig Island!  This annual porkapalooza, which inspires our Pig Island gift set, boasts 25 chefs and 80 locally-sourced hogs in a nose-to-tail feast. On the menu: shoulder, jowl, belly, crackilns, liver––everything but the squeal, from Mosefund Farms' free-range Mangalista hogs.

The civilized scene was nothing at all like Lord of the Flies. White tents dotted the pastoral landscape of Governor's Island's rolling hills, where Pig Islanders strolled about, delighting in the smoky aroma of grilled pork as local chefs prepared the feast, from pork buns, pulled pork sandwiches, and bacon fondue to liver paté, head cheese, and carnitas tacos, chased with shots of mango-bacon-infused tequila, Sixpoint Beer, and New York State wine.

Brooklyn's finest represented the borough with aplomb. Dale Talde and the Pork Slope crew doled out Pressed Whole Pig with Crispy Pork Chips, Pickled Vegetables and Sesame Mustard alonside their now infamous Porky Melt. George Weld and Evan Hanczor of Parish Hall and Egg served up savory melt-in-your-mouth pork belly. Hecho en Dumbo's Danny Mena proffered Tacos al Pastor, Slow Grilled Chile Marinated Pork Served with Caramelized Pineapple on Handmade Corn Tortillas. Jacques Gautier went whole hog with Pork Tacos on Soft Corn Tortillas from Palo Santo and Pulled Pork Sliders from Fort Reno. Umi Nom's King Phojanakong kept it real with Asian-inspired Roast Pork.
The With Love, From Brooklyn crew gorged ourselves without guilt knowing that a portion of the event proceeds benefitted Community Partner Food Systems Network NYC, along with Earth Matter, and Kingsborough Community College. We're already counting down the days until Pig Island 2013. by then we may have fully digested all the pork we ate this year.

Going whole hog
