Artisan: Spoonable

Posted December 08, 2011 Meredith Modzelewski

It’s a simple story, really. One day, Michelle Lewis made a cheesecake. To accompany it she made caramel sauce. She had sauce left over and passed it on to a friend. Her friend raved about it and a business was born. Michelle, after some flavor fine-tuning and ingredient adjustments, was inspired to make caramel sauce as Christmas gifts that year and later to launch Spoonable.

Spoonable caramels contain high-quality ingredients, local and organic when feasible, and never any preservatives. Her five varieties of caramel––classic, lavender, sesame, peppered orange, and chili––show a real creativity for blending flavors, balancing the familiar, gooey brown sweetness with more savory notes. These toppings are top-notch, sophisticated to the core.

Michelle is constantly dreaming up new uses for Spoonable sauces. You can find a few on her website, from pulled pork to Millionaires’ Shortbread, and she’s collecting more from her customers to inspire you in the near future. Setting up her Spoonable table at area shops such as Choice Greene, Blue Apron, and Brooklyn Fare in hopes of enticing her neighbors to try a jar or two. And now that even Murray’s Cheese Shop in Manhattan is carrying Spoonable, she hopes to pique the interest of a whole new group of New Yorkers.

“I'm glad there’s a place online where all these delicious and unique foods can be gathered together. ‘With Love, From Brooklyn’ sums up how I feel about my product too.” says Michelle.
